Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) produces high quality images without the use of x-rays.  It is used to diagnose a variety of medical conditions, especially joint and back pain.  We have 4 MRIs scanners in St James’s including a high-resolution 3T scanner which is especially effective in imaging the brain and prostate gland.

Most studies do not require preparation and take approximately 20-30 minutes for the scan to be performed. Some types of MRI scan will involve an injection of intravenous contrast (or dye) into a cannula (or line) in your arm. It is important for us to know your kidney function prior to administering intravenous contrast and we may need a copy of recent kidney function tests.

Insurance cover: Direct billing for MRI is available from a number of the insurance providers but depends on the source of referral, please ask a member of staff for further details.  If your insurance provider does not directly cover the cost, the expenses can be claimed back depending on your insurance policy at the end of the year.

Direct payment: The price for MRI depends on the area of the body that needs to be scanned and whether intavenous contrast needs to be given.  Prices start from 250 euro and reductions are given if patients need multiple body parts scanned or for medical card holders.  A member of staff will give the exact cost when we have reviewed your doctor's referral.

Appointments: Most MRI appointments can be facilitated within 4-5 days of referral. Urgent requests can be performed on the same day. A referral letter from your doctor is required when the scan is booked.
